In our ongoing effort to tell new stories through handmade artistry, we collaborate with various artisan groups across India to craft thematic seasonal collections. One such collection features the traditional wooden dolls of Varanasi. Passed down through generations, the craft of wooden toy-making is practiced by over 3,000 artisans in Varanasi. The men of the artisan community engage in every stage of production, from procurement to carving. Varanasi, also known as Benaras, is considered the oldest city in the world according to the Puranas. Situated on the banks of the sacred River Ganges, it has long been a place visited by the heavenly gods during the golden era. The Flying Gods of Benaras is a traditional art form that brings this belief to life through exquisite figurines of mythological characters. Each wooden doll—whether a god or goddess riding their Vahan (travel companion)—is carefully crafted from teak wood and intricately hand-painted with vibrant vegetable colors to bring out every fine detail. This collection features celestial figures such as Shiva, Vishnu, Brahma, Durga, Kali, Lakshmi, Saraswati, Narasimha, Ganesha, Hanuman, and others, making it a unique collection of art that can turn any home into a heavenly space.
