In our ongoing pursuit to create new stories of handmade craftsmanship, we collaborate with artisan groups across the country to craft thematic seasonal collections. One such collection celebrates the traditional dolls of Varanasi, a centuries-old art passed down through generations. This intricate craft of wooden toy-making is practiced by over 3,000 artisans in Varanasi, where the men of the artisan community engage in the various stages of production. Varanasi, also known as Benaras, is believed to be the oldest city in the world according to the Puranas. Situated on the banks of the sacred River Ganges, this city has long been a place of spiritual significance, often visited by the gods in the golden age. The Flying Gods of Benaras is a traditional art form that brings this deep-rooted belief to life, through exquisite figurines of mythological characters. Each wooden doll represents a god or goddess, accompanied by their Vahan (travel companion), skillfully carved from teak wood and meticulously hand-painted using vibrant vegetable colors. This collection features celestial figures such as Shiva, Vishnu, Brahma, Durga, Kali, Lakshmi, Saraswati, Narasimha, Ganesha, Hanuman, and more, turning your home into a heavenly space.
